King Sultan had a loyal eagle named Garuda. They had crossed deserts, jungles, and mountains together. They were the best of friends. One day, the king journeyed alone through a harsh land. He grew tired, hungry, and very, very thirsty. At last, he found a beautiful waterfall. He rushed to fill his bowl to drink. But SWOOSH! Garuda flew down and knocked the bowl from his hands. The king tried again. Again, Garuda stopped him. Angry and weak, the king shouted, “Why are you doing this?!” At last, in a burst of rage, he struck Garuda with his sword. The eagle fell, silent and still. Tears filled the king’s eyes. “I’m sorry, my friend…” He left the water behind and climbed the mountain, heart heavy. At the top, he saw something terrible— A dead, venomous snake at the stream’s source. The water was poisoned. Garuda had been trying to save him.
